Mark Gardner’s striking works reveal a deep understanding and appreciation for the wood he sculpts. Living and working in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Mark is inspired by his surroundings every day. He often waits to find just the right piece of maple, cherry or ash before starting a new work. He views it as “using found objects in sculpture. The material differs from species to species, and tree to tree,” presenting new challenges and opportunities. In his most recent body of work, Mark has applied his meticulous carving onto human scale, sculptural forms.
