Wood sculptor Christian Burchard works in Pacific Madrone Burl, a wood rich in color and texture found along the Northwest coast of the United States. Using the wet burl found in the roots of the trees, he thinly cuts and turns his forms. As the water evaporates, the wood shrinks and warps, imbuing his pieces with a sense of “attitude and gesture.” Often the wood is bleached to remove color, or etched with a burning tool to create a pattern. Christian’s diverse body of work is representative of the essence of human nature.
